Christmas dinner at the Historic Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley, CA- A California State Landmark

The Historic Holbrooke Hotel was built in1862, and was named the Exchange Hotel, because it was convenient to the local Gold exchange.  In 1974 the hotel was declared a California State landmark.  The restaurant in the hotel is serving Christmas dinner from 1Pm to 6PM on the 25th, with a menu at $28.95 per adult, and $15.95 per child under 10.  The hotel is all spruced up for the holidays, I saw this myself when I recently visited for the Cornish Christmas festival.  A local, Mr. Snow, was roasting chestnuts over an open fire, and allowing people to taste them for free.  A backdrop to this lovely scene was the Historic Holbrooke Hotel.    Before or after dinner, there is a fire at the Golden Gate Saloon warm up and enjoy specialty drinks.

Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill- with a view of Lake Merritt

I remember when I was pregnant with my son, over 5 years ago, and they were renovating the old boat house at Lake Merritt into a new restaurant.  I had a feeling even then it would be fabulous!  Last Saturday, my family (including my son) went to Lake Chalet for lunch.  My son loved the macaroni and cheese, and my organic salad was delicious.  Everyone enjoyed their food, and it was better than even 6 months ago when we went.  There is a gorgeous view, and there are even gondola rides, which I actually did with my son!  I highly recommend this place!

Copperopolis - golfing at Saddle Creek Resort and dining in town

I recently discovered a new, old town called Copperopolis and it is staying in my memory.  A few miles away is some of the best golf in California at the Saddle Creek Resort, which has new, old bungalows and other accommodations, plus dining.  In town, I discovered two delicious restaurants that both faced the town square, which is decorated with ghosts, goblins, etc. for Halloween!  Panini's Italian Grill had delicious spaghetti, lasagna, and comforting minestrone soup.  Griff's Barbecue and Grill had great barbecue, and I had a delicious salad!

I went to a friend's wedding recently and I heard an amazing DJ from Star Productions in Oregon!  I loved the choices of songs as well as the music videos on the screen in the background!  It was so fun and revealing to see the bride and groom's favorite songs, such as Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Blue Moon playing during the father and daughter dance!

songs I like- "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" by Death Cab For Cuties

This morning as I was writing a blog in a cafe, I heard the song, "I Will Follow You Into The Dark," by Death Cab For Cuties.  I had a teary night last night seeing my friend dance with her dad at her wedding.  When I woke up today, I felt a sense of sadness for a minute, then when I heard that song, a few tears fell again.  The song reminds me of friends and family who have passed away, and how hard it is without them in my life.  I have a sense of sadness for all those who have lost loved ones, it is so hard.

These are some ofnthe words:

I Will Follow You Into The Dark
by Death Cab for Cuties

Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark.

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If heaven and hell decide
That they are both satisfied.....

This song reminds me of the stages grief when losing a loved one.  When people I've loved have passed away, it felt like I died, or was dying.  There was a darkness about life, I've felt alone and isolated.  I haven't felt part of the world and things have seemed to go to fast and be too cruel.  For me, when my close family and friends have died, each time it feels a small part of me is gone too.  It is hard to explain.  Sometimes I remember them and I feel that part of me I lost comes alive again, yet other times I remember that fear, isolation, and darkness and it is hard to remember their essence.

I miss you, Dad!  I will always love and remember your smile and spark!

This song can be seen on u-tube by FearRonaldMcdonald, it has some wonderful photos!  Also, it can be purchased from Google Play, Amazon MP3, and iTunes.

I didn't have my father at my wedding, it was harder than I thought....

Yesterday, I went to a dear friend's wedding and it was such a sweet event.  The one part that brought me in tears, though, was seeing my friend dance with her dad during the father-daughter dance.  It brought me to tears quickly and unexpectantly.  I still feel teary and it is the next morning.  I really miss him and it has been years.  Another friend at the wedding was telling me that she tells her daughters to tell her and her husband anything since no one loves them as much as them.  That reminded me how much safer in life I felt with my dad around, he always had a way to help me see a different perspective.  I remember when he was dying in the hospital, he said that he didn't want to leave, as he wanted to take care of my mom and I.  I remembered that also last night as I saw my friend smiling and so safe in her dad's arms.  I wish I had my dad around still, I miss him so much.

Autobahn Cafe, Oakland, CA- in adorable Victorian

I'm sitting by the bay window in an old Victorian having a cup of chai.  When I look out the large windows I can't help but imagine what people looked like when they originally looked out these windows.  When I gaze out the bay windows I can dream....  This place does that, even early in the morning.  There is classic, dreamy music such as, "As Time Goes By," playing in the background.  I love this place!   The menu looks delicious too!

ecopsychology- could being in nature help a relationship

Ecopsychology is the study of the connection between the natural world and psychology.  A ecopsychologist would help a get more in touch with the natural world, and prescribe more outdoor family for a family or couple.   We as a society are getting farther away from nature, so it makes sense how this kind of psychology would help families and couples.

Campout at Full Belly Farm, tonight, $25.00 per car

Full Belly Farm in Yolo County, CA is having a campout tonight.  The price is $25.00 per car and no reservations are required, and you do not have to have a CSA membership to camp over.   This year is the 26th annual celebration, and the main festivities are  today from 11AM to 11PM.  Last year my son and I drove to Guinda for the Saturday celebration, but did not camp.  They had food, music, and other entertainment.  They also had tractor tours of the property which were really interesting!  This year we had another engagement so couldn't go, but I look back fondly at last year's trip there.  Next year I want to camp there as it was a long trip there and back.

Check out a video of full belly camp on tube, under the title of Full Belly Camp Documentary by Andrew Pinkham.

Full Belly Farm is a certified organic farm located in the beautiful Capay Valley of Northern California.  Their CSAF program offers boxes of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, and offers seasonal outings like these, some for members of the CSA only and others for the general public.

Tours: Bay area Green Tours, San Francisco Bay Area

Bay Area Green Tours

A memorable tour I went on this past year was the Sustainable Restaurant Tour of San Francisco.
I saw a whole new side of San Francisco that took me outside of my comfort zone of places I normally go to!  Also, it gave me an inside tour of the restaurant, I got to meet chefs and vendors, and it was so yummy and healthy!  The tour ended at the farmer's market at the ferry building which is a food lovers dream!  Recently, on September 28th, there was a San Mateo Coast Farm Tour that visited farms on the San Mateo Coast and included lunch and a tasting session.  The price was $99. for adults and $68. for children 12 and under.  The participants were able to hop onto a luxury biodiesel coach for this unique journey along highway 1, at bus stops in either San Francisco, Berkeley, or Half Moon Bay.

Secret Tip:

Years ago, my cousin visited the Bay Area, and for months before we had been planning a trip up Highway 1 to Fort Bragg and Mendocino and the skunk train.  Unfortunately, my new Honda had gotten broke into the week before her visit and had gotten trashed with broken windows and so forth,  so I had to rent a small car (all I could afford) for our trip.  It was horrible driving on Highway 1 as I'm afraid of heights and that rental car did not hold the road well.  It was so stressful for me!  It would have been  dreamy to be able to take a tour of the highway 1 farms by taking the biodiesel coach and be able to visit with family and friends and not have to worry about driving!  This would be a great tour for me to treat out of town guest to, as I would also enjoy it and learn something!

Cookbooks and bakeries: Good Morning Baking, by Mani Niall

My favorite bakery in Oakland, CA is Sweet Bar Bakery on Broadway Avenue in Oakland, CA.  Mani, the owner has a new cookbook called Good Morning, Baking.  There are some yummy recipes to have for yourself or to share!  One recipe I noticed looked really yummy for fall is the Brown sugar-sour cherry doughnuts on p. 108 of the book.  When I was growing up in Michigan in the fall we always went to the cider mills in the fall and had cold, fresh apple cider and warm, soft cinnamon and sugar doughnuts!  Mani grew up in Michigan in his early years and I found out this past week that his dried cherries that he uses in his sour cherry, oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies are actually from Traverse City, Michigan.  I love this bakery!!

The Cheese Plate plus white wine

"Every meal should include a cheese course.  Period.  And despite what you may have heard, white- not red-is best with it.  Prepare to believe."

bon appétit, October 2013, p. 116, "The Perfect Match, The Cheese Plate + White Wine."

Blue Cheese, with off-dry German Riesling, (labeled Spatlese or Auslese.)  The reason is that salty, stinky blue cheese needs a counter balancing sweetness without sacrificing fat cutting acid.

Goat Cheese, with Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc.  The reason is that mineraly Chèvre is wiped off the palate by a wave of bright acidity.

Parmigiano Reggiano, with Oloroso Sherry.  The reason is that the nuttiness and depth of the cheese is a great combination with the caramelized flavors of the wine.

Yesterday, I was at COUTURE INVITATIONS on Berkeley, and I looked at some of the invitations they were creating on their old fashioned letterpress printers.  They really do look different!  Plus, they were so nice!  I had seen this place before as my dog's store is around the corner, Holistic Hound.  I want to do my business cards there.  I'll write about the results.

Weddings at Millenium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles

I had the opportunity to see a wedding reception at Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.  This wedding reception venue has two to four weddings a day on weekends, and also does weekday weddings.  There was something magical about seeing the bride and groom in the historical, grand lobby!  The Biltmore opened in 1923 to national acclaim as the largest hotel west of Chicago and by 1969 was designated a Historic Cultural Landmark by the city of Los Angeles.

This hotel was built to create awe and wonder for those viewing it, and when you walk in the lobby you definitely get that feeling.  The idea for the hotel arose out of a desire to create a grand icon to show the rest of the country that Los Angeles had "arrived."  By 1920, filmmaking was Los Angeles' biggest industry and the perfect climate its biggest attraction.  Since the city had no landmark hotel,  hotelier John McEntee Bowman financed the building of "The Biltmore," like the other hotels in the country he had developed.  Today, the "Biltmore" hotels are unrelated except in name.

A Beaux-Arts composition with Spanish-Italian Renaissance detail was meant as a throwback to the Castilian heritage of the city.  The angel theme throughout is a symbol of the city as well as the hotel itself.  Throughout the years the hotel has undergone several restorations, such as a 30 million renovation in the mid 70's and a $135 million project between 1984 and 1987, when the main lobby was relocated from its original location to the Rendezvous Court (to accompany the new valet entrance.)  There were two floors converted to offices, murals were touched up, walls were repainted and the marble fountain was added to the Rendezvous Court.

This is a gorgeous, historic venue for a wedding reception, or for a visit.  I would recommend working closely with management on prices and responsibility.

Coast Starlight- Train goes from Seattle to Los Angeles

The Coast Starlight is an amazing journey for couples, families, as well as individuals looking to contemplate life!  On the train from Los Angeles to Oakland they had wine and cheese tasting for adults in the parlor car, children could watch a movie in the movie car during the wine tasting.  I highly recommend getting a sleep car for any overnight or long trips on this train.  My son and I went from Oakland-San Francisco to Eugene and barely slept in the reserved seats.  I ended up giving my son both seats so he could spread out, and I sat on the floor and read a book.  It is worth every penny!

Encuentro Cafe and Wine Bar- Oakland, CA- Vegetarian

Encuentro started as  a small vegetarian bistro tucked on the edge of Jack London Square.  The dishes change daily.  In September, Sher will open a second location, at Second and Clay streets.  Both eateries will be called Encuentro.  The current Encuentro will then serve small plates and have a wine bar ambiance and the new Encuentro will offer slightly more formal mood with coursed service.

Couples at Disneyland- visit Carthay Circle restaurant and bar in California Adventure

While my son and I were in line for a ride in Cars Land, a couple told me about how gorgeous the bar was at Carthray Circle restaurant the Disney California Adventure Park.  Park admittance is required as it is in the park.  It is gorgeous inside.  I even peeked though I didn't order anything. My son was excited to go back to the hotel to swim.  Children are allowed at the tables, but not at the bar.  This would be a fun date night spot!  It has a definite old hollywood feel to it!

Cobblestone Manor B & B and wedding venue- Auburn Hills, MI

My son and I stayed here on one of our trips to Michigan.  We got in late and the innkeepers were amazingly hospitable.  There was a group off women sitting in the breakfast nook playing cards, I found out later that they were on a friends retreat.   As I walked in and toured the place, I imagined how wonderful it would be as a wedding venue.  Plus, you could have close family and friends stay at the B& B.   The outside is gorgeous, and I especially love the breakfast nook on the inside.  This would also be such a fun place for reunions or a friends getaway.  The B&B has a private chapel that holds 50 people and an outdoor wedding garden.  If you used this place as a wedding venue, I think it would be best to rent the whole B&B to family and friends.  My son loved this place as it had a storybook quality to it!

Chicago - architectural and Historical Cruises, cocktail cruises at 6 or 8 PM

My son and I went on an architectural and historical cruise last night.  We went to the 6 PM as the time worked best for us, but on the cruise there were many couples!  If you pay a little extra, you can have cocktails included, plus there is already free appetizers, coffee, and lemonade.  Our guide, Chris Meister, is a local Chicago high school teacher, and he was clear and informative.  Plus, there were times after we passed the lock, separating lake Michigan and Chicago River, where they just played music.

This was my favorite activity that we did in Chicago!  We did another boat ride earlier in the week.  I won't mention the name as I only write about things I enjoy, but I will say that the experience was totally different.  On the other boat, I couldn't even understand the guide, the staff wasn't friendly, and there wasn't even half of the ambiance of this cruise.  I would highly recommend going on the Chicago History Museum's Chicago Line Cruises.  I wish we'd gone on this one the first time!

Through this tour we also learned that the gigantic ferris wheel at Navy Pier was first designed for the world's fair.  We walked to Navy Pier after we got off the boat.  It happened to be Wednesday night, which is the weekday night during the summer when they have fireworks at 9:30PM.  It couldn't have been more perfectly planned if I'd tried.  We ate at Bubba Gump's restaurant at Navy Pier, which my son loves (they also have a location in San Francisco).

The Chocolate Garden, Coloma, Michigan- handmade truffles

We stopped by the Chocolate Garden on the way to New Buffalo, Michigan.  They speicalize in handmade truffles, and even have a truffle tasting bar!  Since I love chocolate, I really enjoyed the truffle tasting experience.  It was also fun to see my son taste the three different truffles, and decide which one he liked best.  His favorite was the salted dark chocolate.  My husband like the hazelnut milk chocolate. I liked the dark chocolate truffle.   I also got the drinking chocolate which doesn't have any dairy, it is just rich, chocolate goodness!  The place is in the middle of rolling countryside and it is nestled in fruit orchards.

The Buddha explains true love.....

I remember in high school when I was a senior in an English class with Ms. Wilson, I had to select a topic to do a report on, I wanted to write about love, but my teacher said I could only do Platonic Love.  When I really started doing at scholarly and religious writings about platonic love it was fascinating!

My friend had told me that when she had read the book, Buddha Love, it helped to change her definition of what what love should look like.  Today, as I was looking for more on the topic, I found a blog about a conversation between Buddha and King Pasenadi from a book, "Old Path, White Clouds."

Here is an excerpt, but the whole passage is on the blog below, "Because the nature of such love depends on the concepts of 'me' and 'mine,' it remains entangled in attachment and discrimination....."

Don't even think of changing him or her!

A friend told me about the acronym, DEAR, which translates to "Don't even think of  changing him/her!"  I firmly believe that when people change it is because the person wants and is personally ready to do so!  A partner cannot convince or make someone change.  This is one of the biggest relationship mistakes I see among my friends who are in relationships.  I think everyone intrinsically wants to be loved unconditionally, rather than being told they'll be loved if.... and when......

wet noses, warm hearts, pets always love you!

I'm writing today about ARF in Walnut Creek, CA.   I went there yesterday with my son as we are looking for a dog to join our family.  This is the second time we have visited and though we haven't found our dog soul-mate yet, we are still looking!

A few facts from the annual report from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012 share why I think that ARF is such a wonderful place!
-1,974 dogs and cats were adopted from ARF  (Those dogs were from public shelters where they had run out of time)
-3,357 spay and neuter surgeries (they provide community low-cost services and $25 spay/neuter for Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas
-85,724 adult volunteer hours
-172,826 pounds of donated pet food (Distributed to local low-income families to provide for their pets)

Community Service at ARF-  There are four hour community service days to students grades 6-12.  Community service days create projects to benefit ARF shelter animals, such as creating enrichment items for ARF animals, baking dog treats, landscaping and animal care cleaning tasks, etc.  As everyone knows now, colleges are looking for not just grades but students with character.

Flu season- I'm sick!

I have the flu!  I can barely write as I feel so lousy.  My friend, a nurse practitioner, told me to drink ginger tea as my stomache hurts really bad!  Other things I'm trying to do is stay warm.  I asked my husband to pick up a hot water bottle for me a few days ago, he didn't, so I'm still cold at night.  I am going to make a big pot of chicken noodle soup today so I'll post the recipe later, if it is yummy.  I bought some ginger soda at Whole Foods, and that helped a little.  This flu that is going around is BAD!

Outdoor ice skating in Alameda until January 21st

Last night I went ice skating at the Little Ice Rink in Alameda with my son.  The rink is not that little and they take really good care of the ice.  After each session they groom the ice so it is really smooth skating.  It is beautiful being by the beach and smelling the fresh area, it really lifted my mood!

Long Barn Lodge, Long Barn, CA

We just got back from Long Barn, CA.  It is a perfect solution for big city and suburban burn out!  After taking a walk in the snow, ice skating in the old barn (they even have these big true value white buckets that adults and children are using to help them skate so it is perfect if you are an adult beginner learning.)  Bring your own food and rent a cabin if you want to cook.  It is gorgeous up there and I wish I was still there!

Long Barn event center, weddings, ice skating, etc.

The Long Barn motel and ice skating rink is a great place for couples with children.  We stayed there and there are children everywhere!

In the spring, summer and early fall the ice skating rink on the property turns into an event center which holds up to 300 guests!

If you go and visit in the winter, there is an ice skating rink. The drive there can be icy so bring chains for your car.  Also, there are NO restaurants walking distance from the motel and cabins, so I highly recommend bringing food or takeout.  Some of the cabins have kitchens, but not all of them.

In 1925, rancher Warren Beal built the Long Barn Lodge so people driving over the Sonora Pass could stop for food and lodging.  Long Barn continues to be a fun, historical destination stop!

The ice rink opened on November 9, 2012 for the 42nd season!
